Proper hygiene care and regular checkups are keys in maintaining healthy teeth and gum and avoiding periodontal disease, a common oral infection. Gum disease is a painless and slowly progressing disease that destroys the bony support of the teeth.
Brushing and flossing coupled with professional cleanings are the best ways to prevent gum diseases.

Our highly trained staff will review proper toothbrushing and flossing techniques to ensure that you are adequately removing plaque on your teeth.
We offer a proactive, comprehensive treatment plan that provides patients the best chance of treating periodontal conditions without surgery.
Scaling
Scaling is more intensive that the usual dental teeth cleaning that is performed only in a healthy mouth for primarily preventive purposes.
Scaling removes plaque and tarter beneath the gum line.
Root Planing
Root Planing is the technique used to smooth root surfaces, remove bacterial plaque, biofilm calculus and diseased root surface so the supportive tissues can better attach to the tooth surface.
Antibiotic therapy
A few different types of antibiotics can be used for periodontal disease.
- A tiny chip, Periochip®, can be placed in the gum pocket and absorbed over time. The active ingredient delivered is chlorhexidine, which is an antimicrobial.
- Tiny spheres of Arestin®, which is an antibiotic, can be injected into the pocket and subsequently, slowly absorbed over a period of eight days.
- Atridox®, an antibiotic gel, can be injected into the gum pockets.
A combined therapy of localized antibiotics plus scaling and root planing is more effective at fighting periodontal disease than simply scaling and root planing alone.
